Media Design School Recap

Last year I took a course in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics at MDS. Deadlines were tight and I wasn't exactly an animator before I started the course so it was quite a tough year, for me at least.

Here are some things that I made for MDS:

This was a fantasy brief created for the Premiere section of the course. It is for a nostalgia channel that plays all of the old goodies that was once seen on television.

The summative to end the Premiere module. Once again, we were given clips to edit. We were also encouraged to create new logos or change existing ones to suit our needs. This is a fantasy brief on creating a promo for the 6th season of the popular TV show 'Smallville.' (Yes it is in DV-PAL)

This was about learning the basics of animation, the physics of the knife, warping of shapes within the context of time and reality. An extension to the basics of our puppet tool exercise.

This is Bob, our vain, overweight alien. This was a little exercise further exploring the capabilities of the puppet tool. We also used the slice effect to do some time consuming lip syncing. The audio originally comes from the movie Zoolander I think?

Was bored and really crap at using the Puppet Tool, so I decided to practice a bit. It's a cartwheel into coin drop fail.

Here we had to create an animatic for a trailer if that we supposedly would create if it was good enough. I came up with a story about an alternative world where everyone has objects as their head. A figure known locally as the Sockhead is a poor misunderstood soul who as described, wears a sock on his head...

An exercise for us to play around, to make it as simple or as complicated as we want. Still wasn't confident with 3D space at this point in time, so everything is just flat or resized to give a false sense of depth. I had chosen to use the interrogation scene from Shrek 3, because it's just that awesome.

For this summative we were told to create a 30 second titles piece for a made up show, so i did this for a political talk show called 'Political Broadcast.' All the imagery is loosely based off what has been happening in New Zealand and just the haps of politics in general.

Created a Noel Leeming retail ad to the soundbed provided.

Four week project where we get to create work based off a part of a song of our choosing. Vindicated - Dashboard Confessional. Originally I had planned for this to be done in a hand drawn style, but it didn't work out and I was starting to run out of time so I stuck with something I was more comfortable with. The pacing's not that great, but heck it was a good attempt for such little time I guess.

And here's what I have to show for the year:
Most of the things are in here, some aren't because it just didn't make the cut. There are also some matte paintings and VFX pieces in there that I never uploaded.

Student Reel from taking the Diploma of Visual Effects and Motion Graphics.

That pretty much sums up my year at MDS. Currently still hustling three jobs while trying to find that one mograph job that will allow me to quit all three of my current ones. Guys please introduce me to anyone that may seem like they need something animated haha.

And as a bonus:

This is something I made about what would happen if rotoscoping was to become fully animated. I was REALLY bored. Apparently it went famous in the teacher's lounge and they were sending this to each other.
